Item 6 Crime Report

Each month the Salt Lake City Police department prepares a report of all Community Council areas. You can locate this report on the Salt Lake City Police web site by going to: slcgov.com/police/crimestats/crimestatshome.htm

During March 2008 the overall count of reported crimes for our community went up by 9 incidents. It is important to stay current on the things happening in our area and to be watchful in your neighborhoods. Item  1 “Community Garden” by Scott Steenblik (359-0354)
We learn by teaching and doing in the garden.  It is a community garden because we have the opportunity to learn and teach and receive support from the Community Council, our neighbors, neighborhood businesses and each other.
During the past year we have had the financial support of Mountain Valley Seeds.  We plan to use the support from Chevron Oil this coming year to garden from March 2008 – March 2009.  Yes, we can garden and harvest in the winter.  It is our plan to install additional water pumps and improve our water delivery system.  We grow 50+ varieties of vegetables each year along with a variety of flowers.
Everyone is welcome to come.  We will teach, learn and harvest together.  We are also looking for someone with woodworking skills to help us build a sign for the garden this year.  We are always looking for additional financial support so we can continue our efforts and grow with the garden.  If you are willing and interested, please contact me or a member of the Community Council board.

The Community Plaza on Redwood Road and 700 North is moving toward final approval.  The plans for this center are a huge improvement over the current eye sore. The developer and architect requested suggestions from the community for tenants in the mini-mall.  The suggestions coming from those who attended our last Community Council meeting included:  Fabric Shop, Copy Center, Craft Store, Bicycle Shop, Book Store, Bagel Shop and a family oriented restaurant such as Applebee’s, Sizzler, Olive Garden, etc. These suggestions have been passed along to the developer.

Please help. Call Tammie at 532-1024. We also would like you to organize a Neighborhood Watch Group on your street. It is an application of the Golden Rule to your street. To begin, call Sgt. Ross, SLCPD.

  2. We have received a number of questions about illegal parking as well as changing the parking strip from grass to rocks . We have also been asked about some zoning issues. Carol Gent and Linda Goddard are our our enforcement officers and will be present at this meeting to respond.

  3. The Urban Forester, Bill Rutherford, has announced a new program concerning trees on your lot. They are now planting smaller trees in parking strips. One year later you can request a larger tree be planted six feet in from the sidewalk. In either case, you have to sign an agreement stating that the tree belongs to the city, but you will care for it.

  4. The crime report for September showed 1 aggravated assault, 2 car strips, 11 auto thefts, 7 burglaries, 9 car prowls, 4 gang related, 1 arson, and 2 sexual assaults. We have a new contact officer. His name is Detective David Wierman, telephone number is 799-3312.

The developer wants to place a Mexican grocery store on that site. It will be discussed at this meeting. This was proposed some time ago and it was rejected on the grounds that we already have enough. Please be present.

INFORMATION ITEMS

Item 1

Kyle LaMalfa represents the SLC Peoples Market which last year was conducted at the Northwest Multipurpose Center. This year it will be at Jordan Park from June 10 thru October 21 during the hours of 10 am to 3 pm. There will be a charge of $10 for home gardeners and professional food vendors. Other charges range from $15 to $25.

I have not encouraged our participation in this activity even though I was invited to be in on the ground floor of the planning. My main objection was that it would only be held on Sundays which automatically cuts off all anti-Sunday shoppers. But the organizers washed away my objections without any consideration. The idea has good merit.

Item 2

The City has republished the Good Neighbor’s Partnership Resource Guide. I have a number of copies should any of you want them and can get more. For new members of the community, this is a guide covering a number of topics ranging from Senior Center, Public Transit, Schools, Youth Programs. Neighborhood Watch, Cultural Awareness, Housing/Zoning Enforcement, Yard Landscaping and Maintenance, Parking, and Health.

The publication is written so that the left side of every page is written in English and the left hand side is in Spanish. The whole document is cut and assembled so that the smallest page is at the top and the longest one is on the bottom. They are free and available for you to hand out.

Item 3

If your home has suffered recent damage from the blasting at Staker please keep us informed. It would be of most value if you could document it with written information and/or pictures. Carlton Christensen is working on this but you must provide some proof that it occurred as a result of a specific blast on a specific day and time.

Item 4

INFORMATION ITEMS

Item I
The annual city neighborhood cleanup program is in full swing. They will cover the area from 1-15 to 1200 West beginning July 9 and from 1200 West to Redwood Road beginning July 2. As in the past, please keep your green material separated from the rest of the items. Do not place anything on the curb earlier than 10 days prior to these dates. Report all illegal dumping to 313-6641 or 535-6999. Please give license plate number, color and make of vehicle, if possible, Hazardous waste should be taken to Jordan Park on the fourth Thursday, April-September 7:00 a.m. -10:00 a.m. This includes old paint cans, aerosols, garden sprays, etc.

Item 2
With Spring here, we remind you again to keep your doors locked, even if you are working in your yard. Keep a spare key in your pocket and make sure that your garage is locked at all times. There are some brazen thieves around, even riding bicycles, who will come into your home if your door is unlocked and even if you are in the area. Also, do not leave your garbage or recycling bins on the street after the pickup. It is a sure sign that no one may be home. Have a neighbor take them in for you if you are not expecting to be home soon or are away on a trip.
Item 3
Community Council elections are scheduled for this meeting. If you are interested in serving as a vice chair, please let us know ASAP.
Item 4
The City has established a community council web site. You can access it by going to www.slcgov.com. On the far right of your screen you will see “get involved”, then click on “Community Councils”. Michael Bennett keeps our web site updated for us.
Item 5
The police report showed that in March there were 3 assaults, 6 burglaries, 4 car prowls, 2 car strips, 14 car thefts, 2 gang-related crimes, 1 sexual assault, 1 robbery, and 3 weapons drive-by shootings.
Item 6
Please do all that you can to buy local first rather than go elsewhere. If we do not patronize our local stores and restaurants, we will lose them.
Item 7
The city’s reading program will focus on John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. There will be numerous events sponsored by the Library. You can log on to www.slcpl.org for continuing activities through May 21.
